Curriculum Vitae in Brief- HPB
Dr Biju Pottakkat completed his basic medical training (MBBS) from Medical College, Calicut and Masters in Surgery (MS) from Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, Kerala. He did his post-doctoral speciality training (MCh) in Surgical Gastroenterology at Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), Lucknow. Later he obtained post-doctoral fellowship (PDF) in hepatopancreatic and biliary surgery (HPB surgery). Due to his specific interest in liver surgery, he went to Japan and was a visiting lecturer in Liver surgery at Kurume University School of Medicine at Fukuoka. He was a visiting fellow in the Department of HPB surgery at Washington University in St. Louis. He completed clinical fellowship in Liver Transplant Surgery at Asian Centre for Liver Disease and Transplantation at Singapore. He was working as a faculty in Liver transplant unit at Department of surgical gastroenterology at SGPGIMS, Lucknow.
Awards and fellowships obtained by him include Fellowship of the United European Gastroenterology Federation Scholarship, Scholarship of the International College of Surgeons, Scholarship of the international council of Coloproctology (ICCP), Young Investigator Award of Korean Society of Gastroenterology are some of them. He has received travel awards from the Japanese Surgical Society, European Association of Endoscopic Surgeons (EAES), American Society of Transplantation, Indian society of Gastroenterology, Indian Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Department of science and technology (DST), Govt of India etc. He has cleared HCCB (health care compliance board certification) of the American Board. Dr Biju Pottakkat has served as Associate Dean Research JIPMER, Head of the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology and is currently the Head of the liver transplant unit. He was administrative in-charge officer of outsourcing wing at JIPMER which handles 2400 staff with an annual budget of INR 62 crores. He was also officer in-charge of several completely executed projects including international hostel and skills centre at JIPMER. He served and serving as chairman of three, member secretary of four and member of 12 academic and administrative committees in JIPMER. He has prepared five detailed project reports with financial outlays of more than 700 crores total.
He was the convener of basic and advanced surgical simulation laboratory at JIPMER. He was member of curriculum committee for various courses and was a member of nursing research monitoring committee. He is the national executive committee member of Association of Surgeons of India (ASI), International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (IHPBA) India and Association of minimal access surgeons of India. He is the secretary of the Indian Chapter of International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association and the national vice president of the Indian Association of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (IAPEN). He is the editor in chief of Journal of Nutrition Research (JNR). He has published 145 scientific papers in indexed journals and authored 11 chapters in text books. He had 290 invited presentations in various international and national conferences. He is PhD guide to five trainees and two Post-Doctoral Fellows. He was part of 42 research projects. He has received seven research grants totalling more than INR 1.5 crores from various agencies including Department of Science and Technology, Scientific and Engineering Research Board (SERB) etc. He was an examiner for national board of examinations, 12 universities across India and served as expert in 14 faculty selection boards. He served as expert in patient safety frame work committee and transplant committee of the national health authority of the Government of India. He is an expert member of the state organ and tissue transplant organization (SOTO) of the state of Puducherry. He is appointed as the special officer for the upcoming project ‘Institute of Organ Transplantation, in the state of Kerala, India.
