The department has been successfully functioning from the Regional Cancer Centre since May 2009. The department is equipped with 12 beds for inpatients, 10 daycare beds, 4 ICU beds and 3 BMT beds. The state of art intensive care unit for the care of critically ill cancer patients was started in September 2010.Additionally, the Regional Cancer Centre is provided with 17 special ward beds. Currently the training program includes DM Medical Oncology (2 students per year), PDF in Heamto-oncology, PDF IN pediatric Oncology (1 student per year) as well as 1 PhD scholar per year.
The department faculty actively take part in various specialty tumor clinics (Surgery and Breast oncology clinic, Hemato-oncology clinic, Gynec-oncology
the clinic, Ortho tumor clinic, Lung cancer clinic, CML clinic) during the afternoon.
The department also actively participates with the department of pathology in a clinicopathological meeting and with the radiology department to discuss difficult cases.
JIPMER has been been an active component of the virtual tumor board discussions involving various centers coordinated by the National Cancer Grid.
For the improvement of patient care services the department has involved social workers, special patient guides and a full time dietician. In addition we also participate in multiple fund raising activities for the department and patient awareness programs.
