DEPARTMENT OF DERMATOLOGY AND STD

The Department of Dermatology was established in 1960 by Dr. A. Velou, four years after JIPMER was taken over by the Government of India.  Since then, the department has steadily progressed, expanded, and diversified its activities to contribute to the advances in the understanding and treatment of various dermatologic diseases. The department has expanded since its inception and diversified its activities by establishing various services as follows:

  • 1964 Leprosy clinic
  • 1973 STD clinic
  • 1996 Dermatosurgery
  • 2009 Lasers and cosmetic dermatology
  • 2010 Pediatric Dermatology clinic
  • 2016 Subspecialty clinics
  • 2019 Epidermolysis Bullosa Clinic

Dermatology office is located in the first floor of IPD block. Dermatology Office complex comprises of seven rooms viz., office of the head of the department, five consultants and one office staff room. Department office functions as the link between the departmental and institute administration. All the institute and external communications are channelled through the office. Dermatology office plays the role of back-end office administration for the main wing of the department viz- outpatient clinics, in patient facility, minor operation theatre and training programmes for PG and PDCC candidates. Office administration activities include human resource management (HRM) of doctors, nursing staff & para medical staff, conducting conferences and workshops, MD Courses & exams, purchase and maintenance of equipments and consumables, etc. Office is manned by one stenographer,  one data entry operator, and one cleaning staff. The department is headed by a senior faculty in the cadre of Professor.

Dr Rashmi Kumari is currently the Head of the department. The head of the department is acting as the chief executive officer of the department. As the staffs in the department are working in diverse domains, each faculty is allotted various areas for the betterment of services, teaching and research. Head of the department is responsible for all the academic and administrative activities. Clinical services are designated to individual consultants and senior residents to ensure better patient care through individualized approach. Head of the department is the chairman of all the academic programs and courses running in the department. HOD is the convener of the MD and PDCC exit examination. All research proposals need clearance from the head of the department. As the chairman of the department purchase committee, HOD must generate the entire purchase requirement for the department and conduct the committee meetings. HOD chairs faculty meetings, in charge nurses meetings and all other meetings in the department. Head of the department initiates system changes taking inputs from ongoing feedbacks and discussions. Annual performance of each employee will be assessed by HOD and will be forwarded to the director.
