The Department of Anatomy sprouted under the leadership of Dr. Oliver (French) and Dr. V.M Charnalia (Indian) during the inception of JIPMER, when only MBBS course was offered. With the growth of the institute, the department has expanded to impart undergraduate, postgraduate medical training and other courses such as Ph.D., Allied Medical Sciences, and short scale projects for students.

The department is actively involved in patient care services in processing karyotyping for the past 22 years. The karyotyping unit is well equipped with automated workstation and facilitates its studies for work of FISH/interphase FISH. The department is well stabilized for studies of DNA damage using comet assay and micronucleus score.

It has grown in infrastructure with the establishment of Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for studies in molecular genetics, gene studies and runs a full-time service and project work.

The department collaborates with clinical departments to conduct cadaveric surgical skill training workshops, periodically.
