Department of Emergency Medicine & Trauma
Location: Ground Floor, Emergency Medical Services Block, JIPMER
Facilities: Operates 24/7 with X-ray, Ultrasound, CT scan, ECG, and biochemical point-of-care lab services. Handles trauma, cardiac, neurological, toxicological, surgical, and medical emergencies.
Triage System
- Red Zone: Life-threatening cases – immediate treatment
- Yellow Zone: Urgent but stable – seen within 30–60 minutes
- Green Zone: Non-critical – seen within 1–4 hours

- Basic Life Support (BLS): 3 ambulances
- Advanced Life Support (ALS): 2 ambulances
Coverage & Eligibility:
- Free ambulance service up to 50 km (one way) for JIPMER staff, dependents, students, and pensioners.
- Special cases like destitute or unknown patients are considered individually.

Department & Services Overview
Established in 2013, the Department of Emergency Medicine & Trauma handles over 400 patients daily and runs an MD Emergency Medicine residency since 2014. It offers high-acuity care, advanced trauma management, and academic training with 24x7 diagnostic and ICU support.
Other Emergency Services
- Medical Emergency Unit (1st Floor): 10-bedded HDU with observation wards.
- Cath Lab & Cardiac ICU (2nd Floor): 7 beds for acute cardiac care.
- Emergency & Trauma OTs (2nd & 3rd Floors): Equipped for all emergency surgeries.
- Trauma ICU (3rd Floor): 6 beds with ventilatory support.
- Surgical Emergency Unit (4th Floor): 50 beds for urgent surgical cases.
- Burns Unit (5th Floor): Managed by Plastic Surgery Department.
- EMS Stepdown Ward: 27 beds, including 4 ventilator-supported, for recovery monitoring.
