Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER) was started in the year 1956, was upgraded in 1964 as a Regional Postgraduate Centre and it was declared as an Institution of National Importance in 2008 through an Act of Parliament. It was affiliated to University of Madras initially and later to Pondcherry University. It is one of the premier institutions in India for undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and has been ranked consistently amongst the top five medical colleges in India. JIPMER, with 28 academic departments, imparts Undergraduate (UG), Postgraduate (PG) and super specialty Medical Training through a working hospital (JIPMER Hospital) with a bed strength of 1500. Full time Ph. D Programme is available in six disciplines. JIPMER ensures that teaching methods employed, facilities and content of the programme are in line with the latest innovations with a strong science base. From July 2008 the Institute has become an autonomous institute and has been empowered to conduct various courses in health sciences and award its own Degrees and Diplomas and other academic distinctions which are recognized by the statutory bodies like Medical Council of India, Dental Council and Nursing Council of India, etc.
